Oral Surgery South Valley Oral and Facial Surgery CA 95123-1220If you are scheduled to undergo oral surgery anytime soon, you have to prepare your teeth first along with the need to steel your resolve to actually go through the procedure.

We have had so many patients in the past who canceled because they already psyched themselves out, only to come back later on when the pain became unbearable.

Depending on the surgery, you may be given local or general anesthesia, with the latter mixing IV and oral medications to render you unconscious.

Preparing Your Teeth for the Procedure

You will be given an orientation by your dentist to prepare your teeth prior to the surgery. We typically tell our patients to refrain from smoking cigarettes three days before the surgery.

Stop drinking alcoholic drinks also 48 hours before the procedure. If you cannot stand not having to smoke, then at least control yourself 12 hours prior to visiting us. You cannot also light a cigarette in the next couple of days after the procedure.

If general anesthesia is involved, it is strongly recommended that you stop smoking a week before the surgery. If possible, you also stop smoking after the procedure to avoid complications such as infection and even heart attacks. Of course, we are not going to preach about the dangers of smoking because you probably already know all that.

Routine brushing and flossing before the procedure is also advised. With general anesthesia, however, you cannot eat any food the midnight before your surgery. Your anesthesiologist will also recommend when you will have to refrain from drinking liquids.

Do not worry, however, because when we recommend for surgery, we give you tips and instructions that you can just follow to the letter. That way, there is no room for mistakes. Come visit us now so we can schedule your for surgical procedure right away.
