Overcoming the Pain of a Bone Graft

Posted on 1/13/2018 by Dr McMurray
Bone Graft South Valley Oral and Facial Surgery CA 95123-1220Bone grafts are an essential part of dental implants for many patients in order to make sure they're strong enough for long-term use.

Unfortunately, bone grafts do cause some pain and it's common to suffer the same level of pain that you would from a tooth extraction when having a graft done. That means you'll want to take action to help minimize that pain after having the procedure performed.

Rely on your Medication
After having a bone graft in your mouth you'll likely be prescribed pain medication. Make sure that you keep on top of that medication to keep the pain from becoming too intense. You'll be given medication and told when to take it. Follow those directions closely for the first few days or weeks after the graft. Over time the pain will subside and you can reduce the amount of medication that you need to take to deal with the pain.

Avoid Hard Foods

The only other step that you really need to take to keep your grafts from hurting after the procedure is to avoid hard or tough foods. There are certain foods that will irritate your mouth more than others, and you want to steer clear of those as much as possible.

Don't eat steak, beef jerky, bubble gum or any other food that is going to stress out your mouth for a few days. By avoiding any harsh foods you'll feel better faster and minimize the pain that you experience.

Bone grafts are a major procedure, but they aren't excessively painful to have done. We always recommend that our patients take care of their mouths after having the work done, but we don't worry about going overboard with a bunch of aftercare measures. Just stick with your medication and avoid hard foods and you'll be fine.
