Reasons a Root Canal May Fail

There are a few different reasons that you may need a second root canal. When a root canal fails, it is important that you take the time to get the tooth fixed. If you don't, the tooth may end up getting sick and dying, which then would require it to get extracted.

If you notice pain following a root canal that intensifies, you need to give our office a call. We can help either redo the root canal, or extract the tooth if it isn't able to be saved.

Reasons Some Root Canals Fail

The most common reason for a failed root canal is that the root canal was not completed the first time. While this isn't common, it isn't unheard of either. The tubes that get cleaned out during a root canal are incredibly small. Even one little bit of bacteria or infection left behind that doesn't get treated properly can cause the infection to start back up.

Another reason that a root canal can fail is that there were actually two teeth that needed to be cleaned out, but only one was. On an x-ray, if there is a small infection in an adjacent tooth, it may not show up. It may look like the one tooth is infected, but the other is fine. Then, when the root canal is completed, the second tooth begins to have trouble or spreads back to the first, formerly healthy, tooth.

When you come in and see us for a root canal, we will do everything we can to ensure that you only need to have the procedure done once. That way, you do not suffer needlessly, or go through any procedures that could have been avoided. Contact us if you are having any type of residual pain after a root canal procedure, and let us take a look.
